Description
Dmitri Yen is the POV character for the Moskva Academy stories. He is a natural leader and charismatic in his own way. He has a talent for seeing the big picture in most situations and is an instinctive Focus user.
Post-Fall, he and his crew of cadets become a rallying point for the non-co-opted Republic Naval forces. Eventually, he will bring this ragtag group into McKenzie's unified government, effectively declaring that the Republic itself is joining the unified human nation against the Zealots.
Dmitri is a tall, broad-shouldered young man with black hair and brown eyes.
He keeps himself in excellent shape mostly through swimming and parkour.
Dmitri is, in most cases, a relentlessly optimistic individual. He tries to be easy going and friendly to anyone he meets, though that isn't often reciprocated. He has his own internal doubts about his ability to become a quality officer, but the trials surrounding the Fall mostly strip away those doubts.
Dmitri is a natural born leader and combat strategist. In his first time commanding the Moskva, he outmanuevered a far more experienced commander of a Bastion-class and came out of the fight with a win. His techniques are typically unorthodox, but since he wins more than loses, it's hard to argue with the results.
Dmitri is also an instinctual Focus user. It can be assumed that his grandmother was as well, and is likely the one who fostered his talent. In a way, she is the one who provided him with a Velyki Weapon, though this was largely happenstance. He has shown a not insignificant ability for physical durability, enhanced combat reflexes, and for summoning a Velyki weapon without deliberate, formal training.
Dmitri, unbeknownst to himself, was born two weeks early onboard the TRS Cairo on March 3rd, 2673, as it was making its way back to Earth for then-Lieu tent Commander Yen to go on maternity leave. His Father, Alexi Yen, met them in orbit.
He was raised in the Yen Family, a middle-weight organized crime family operating mainly in old Russia but with holdings and interests in at least two other Republic sectors and in a few Freelance stations.
From an early age, Dmitri was being trained and shaped for his eventual role as a Terran Fleet Officer. When Meera married Alexi, a deal was made. She would bring the Yen family the not insignificant holdings of her late family (who all died under mysterious circumstances) and in exchange, she would insure that Alexi had a male heir. The family also agreed that said heir would enter the Fleet, so long as Alexi could father at least one other child by a secondary wife. He has yet to act on this permission.
Much of Dmitri's training came at the hands of his grandmother, Ayela Yen, who, in her prime, commanded the fear and respect of some of the most powerful people in the Republic.
Dmitri's mother, Captain Meera Yen, is the one topic that will risk setting Dmitri off. Roughly 14 years before the Fall, Captain Yen and her entire command staff defected to the League with their Valorous-class cruiser, the TRS Cairo. As of the Fall, Dmitri has not forgiven her for abandoning him, his Father, and the Republic at large.
If Dmitri espouses any faith, it's the Great Mother, but even then, he isn't really a deeply faithful person. Mostly, he thinks that the Great Mother makes some good points about planetary conservation.
Dmitri is a product of the one of the best pre-military academies on Earth and was educated there from his tenth birthday until his 18th. From there, he had a spot secured from an early age to become a cadet in the Moskva Officer Academy.
The Moskva Academy shaped Dmitri into the exemplar of an officer that he is. During his time a the Academy, he was constantly trying to balance his classwork, friendships, the inter-cadet rivalries, and dodging the attention of the Psychotronics Institute.
When the Fall was initiated, Dmitri was almost certainly a shoe-in for the top cadet position. He single-handedly beat an enraged Sooni Zealot, mostly through an instinctual use of Focus. Together with his senior classmates, they saved and secured the Moskva and took her on the run from hostile Republic forces co-opted by the Zealots.
After a short repair/refit session at the CNK Breaker Yard, Yen and his crew set about gathering up the remnants of the Republic fleet that was uncorrupted by the Zealots. Under a deal with one of McKenzie's agents, they agreed to gather up what forces they could and prepare them to fight back against the Zealots.
