Zaine
Leader of the Zealots, a supremely powerful Sooni with extraordinary Focus abilities. Zaine represents the pinnacle of Sooni Focus mastery and leads the fanatical faction dedicated to the destruction of humanity and absolute worship of The Overseers.
Zaine has a deliberately unremarkable appearance with average height and build. He has blonde shoulder-length hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. His most distinctive characteristic is how forgettable he appears - his features are generic enough that most people struggle to recall specific details about him after meeting him.
He typically wears clothing that appears to be off-brand versions of designer items, giving the impression of someone trying to look wealthy without the means to afford authentic luxury goods. This calculated mediocrity in appearance serves as effective camouflage for someone of his true power and influence.
As leader of the Zealots, Zaine (known by his Sooni name Sàen) is driven by fanatical devotion to The Overseers and an absolute belief that humanity must be destroyed. His powerful Focus abilities have made him supremely confident and he views other races, particularly humans, as abominations that offend his gods.
Zaine combines ruthless pragmatism with religious fanaticism, making him particularly dangerous. He is willing to use any means necessary to advance the Zealots' goals, including forbidden techniques and the sacrifice of his own followers. His extremism knows no bounds when it comes to achieving his vision of Sooni supremacy.
Zaine is the brother of Commander Janus, though their relationship is one of mutual antagonism. Where Janus was considered a "worthless reject" among the Sooni, Zaine clearly achieved the opposite extreme, becoming one of the most powerful members of their species.
As leader of the Zealots, Zaine commands a fanatical faction of Sooni who worship The Overseers as gods and believe humanity must be destroyed. The Zealots view any Focus use by humans as an abomination and seek absolute Sooni rule over the galaxy. Under Zaine's leadership, they have gained significant influence within the Sooni Council and work to manipulate galactic politics toward their ultimate goal of human extinction.
Zaine has been engaged in a long-running conflict with various other Sooni factions, particularly the Heretics and operatives like Nyana McKenzie (Reaper), who has been "trying to get Zaine for years." This represents the broader ideological war between Zealots who seek humanity's destruction and those who oppose such extreme measures.
Using his Sooni name Sàen, Zaine led a brutal assault on [Heretic][] forces at the forbidden temple of Banan-ache-iuil. During this confrontation, he demonstrated his forbidden ability to steal velyki from dead and dying opponents, using this power to systematically kill several Heretic leaders including Fìona, Caíodhra, Ruadhán, and Sàlas.
The battle escalated into a direct confrontation with Nyana McKenzie in her full identity as "An Fhàsaire" (The Reaper). Despite his overwhelming power and forbidden techniques, Zaine was eventually forced to withdraw when the Archigos arrived under [Owen Rees][]' command, though he escaped to continue his campaign against the Heretics.
As leader of the Zealots, Zaine's ultimate goal is the complete destruction of humanity and absolute Sooni dominance over the galaxy. He continues to work through the Sooni Council and various shadow operations to manipulate galactic politics toward this end.
Zaine's relationship with his brother represents a fundamental divide in Sooni society between those who achieved power and those who were rejected. Janus's entire agenda centers around making Zaine suffer, while Zaine seems to view his brother as more of an annoyance than a serious threat.
Zaine has engaged in direct combat with the legendary "An Fhàsaire" (The Reaper), representing the ultimate confrontation between Zealot extremism and Heretic rebellion. During their battle at the Temple of Banan-ache-iuil, he demonstrated knowledge of her mother and made cryptic references suggesting a deeper connection to Nyana's origins. Their conflict represents the broader ideological war between those who would destroy humanity and those who would protect it.
