Hand to hand weaponry has a long history in almost every humanoid race, including those with natural weapons, such as Lyndri and NorAellians. While these weapons have proven mostly impractical in modern warfare, there's enough history that most races have a sort of cultural worship of these weapons. That has been enough that while they're never official weapons of war, they still show up a bit more often than one would assume.
Bladed weapons have always been held with a sort of reverence by the races that had a long history with them. Humanity in particular has always had a fascination with bladed weaponry. Swords, knives, pikes, axes, etc. all have a their own mysticism about them.
In modern time, ironically, bladed weapons have had a bit of a resurgance, primarily among Freelancers (or 'enthusiasts' with discretionary income). Not only does carrying a sword bring with it a strange sort of social standing, but it turns out that swords can actually be useful in combat. Because using firearms always has a danger of a ricochet, or puncturing the hull, fighting hand to hand can often be a way of ensuring both parties don't die by depressurization, or that a stray shot doesn't accidentally disable a critical system). It's also still rare enough that unless you're expecting to have to fight a maniac with a sword, being caught off guard might be enough to turn the tide in the sword weilder's favor.
The downside to all of this is, as usual, hand to hand weaponry leaves you open to attack from ranged weaponry. Except in the close quarters of a ship, guns almost universally trump swords.
Built primarily by hand as specialty items, a 'gravitic sheath' is a device that sits at the base of the blade and emits a gravity field around the blade. The primary intent of this is to blunt the impact of a weapon, both protecting the blade and the person or object being hit. (It can even soften the blow to prevent blunt damage like broken bones.)
These devices are primarily used by people doing reenactments, LARPing, or just martial tournaments. They have a standby time of about then hours, but a 'run time' of five to ten minutes. If being used in a tournament, replacement batteries are needed between rounds. (Rounds will even be stopped if a battery is getting low or a device reports an error.)
It is, technically, possible for these to be used to enhance attacks, or make them more lethal, but because of how limited the power budget is on them, and the fact they have low reliability, using them seriously is impractical. Given how much damage a ranged weapon can do, there's very little pressure to improve the technology.
A special note should be made about small blades. Due to better manufacturing techniques, small, bladed weapons are incredibly useful even in the modern age. They can be made super strong, very light, and incredibly sharp. A good knife will not ship or need sharpening even with heavy use. All military officers are issues combat knives, and most Freelancers have a knife or two nearby.
The first type of weapon most species "invent" is either "large rock" or "stick". These types of blun weapons have been improved and refined, but have not moved much past their basic origins.
If bladed weapons might, under some circumstances, make sense due to the confined onboard a ship, blunt weapons make even less sense. No current militaries ues blunt weapons, and even Freelancers generally aren't crazy enough to try to use them seriously in a fight.
