Requiem for Innocence: Precursors follows a complex network of characters entangled in a galaxy-wide struggle for control over emerging technology and power. Central to the story is "Project Dante," a classified experiment involving a revolutionary man-machine hybrid intelligence designed to interface directly with warships. The project is spearheaded by Admiral Alastair McKenzie, whose hidden motives drive much of the narrative as he prepares for an unspecified but imminent threat.
The story introduces key players such as Dante Fiore, a young strategist facing the decision of whether to undergo a life-altering procedure to become the core of the project, and Gregorie Harkov, a People's Republic agent investigating the rumors surrounding Project Dante. The novel delves into themes of sacrifice, identity, and the ethical boundaries of technological advancement as these characters navigate espionage, military conflict, and shifting political alliances.
This is the Rekonin story, turned spy story and full novel. This lays the groundwork for the entire universe and, I think, might just become the first RFI book. It frees up a LOT of the second book to assume people know (or have a passing familiarity with the events, characters, or settings from this book.)
(Edit: It did become the first book.)
